Long definition: A mentor is an experienced and knowledgeable individual who provides guidance, support and advice to a less experienced person, often referred to as a mentee or protege. In higher education, mentors are commonly professors, instructors or senior students who assist and mentor newer students in their academic and personal development.
Etymology: The word "mentor" has its origins in Greek mythology. In Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey", Mentor was a trusted friend and advisor to Odysseus. The term "mentor" eventually came to represent a wise and trusted counselor or guide.
